POSTER SERIES BACKSTORY + CONTEXT
This series dives into the major contributions of three influential writers , Toni Morrison, Rabindranath Tagore, and Gabriel Marquez, who touched on their own experiences with unjust societies, culture, political issues, and harsh realities. I was given the task of designing three posters that demonstrate a clear understanding of typographic hierarchy, composition, and a cohesive visual system. My end goal was to create a harmonious concept for each of these well known writers.
FREE PLAY WORKSHOP
By using printed out type, I was able to explore studies of possible compositions for my final typographic posters. Rips and tears along with overlapping and attention to focal points helped me decide how I wanted to arrange the letterforms of the writers names across all three posters.
PHOTOSHOP EXPLORATION COLOR + TEXTURE
Moving my explorations over digitally began by making scans and of my letterforms and then experimenting with the color, texture, and composition in Adobe Photoshop.
APPLICATION
After implementing color and texture into the letterforms of the writers, I began arranging them in a way the composition could still be readable but have variety across all three posters. I explored many different aspects such as type size, foreground/background, and cropping to achieve this.
LAYERING TYPE
After coming up with a visual system of how I would arrange my letterforms, I began experimenting with how I could incorporate secondary type that advertised an event. I mainly focused on hierarchy for the secondary type and tried to implement cohesion with it throughout my posters. I chose a more simplistic typeface for the secondary type to furthermore communicate my concept.
