CREATURE MARK + INTERPRETIVE PHRASE
During this process, I was given the task to create a unique illustrative interpretation of a creature that I had been assigned. Later on, I would have to create a composition that included this creature mark along with other components that visually helped interpret typography using the Fibonacci Sequence. Taking all of this into consideration, I needed to create a system that was clearly defined by the given space but also one that would help viewers understand the present text. In order to achieve this, I focused on the hierarchy and placement of text within the other graphic elements present.
GATHERING INSPIRATION
Starting out this process, I went on a search to find images of my selected creature. My goal was to find ones that best captured the Hornbill's noticeable physical features and movement. I tried collecting a variety of images that showed the many different angles along with positions this bird could be seen in. In the end, I chose a horizontal image of the Hornbill flying in mid air. I believe I was successful in capturing its main physical features by using an action shot.
CREATURE FORM BASIC SHAPE SKETCHES
During the process of roughly sketching out many different versions of my creature, I was able to capture the significant physical features that I wanted to emphasize in my mark. Spending less time on making detailed sketches and just highlighting main parts of the Hornbill helped me discover the way I wanted to present my mark within a composition.
DIGITAL CREATURE LINE + SHAPE
After creating an outline for the form of my specific creature, I tested out different ways I could arrange, add, and subtract the creature form but still allow it to remain recognizable. My main goal was to simplify the form as much as possible while also keeping the significant and identifiable features.
ITERATIONS + FINAL MARK
After making some slight changes to my mark, I finally landed on one that I believe showcased the Hornbill the best. Having a strong hidden underlying structure to go off of was very important to me during the design process. This structure allowed me to create a form that pushed the limits of simplified abstraction yet kept characteristics and qualities of a natural creature.
INTERPERATIVE PHRASE IDEATION + TYPOGRAPHY
After finalizing my mark, I was tasked to explore ways I could include it in a division of space based off of the Fibonacci Sequence. Typography, line, point, and shape would also be included in this composition. The typography present would be a short phrase informed by the physical and associative attributes of the Hornbill.

COLOR PALETTE EXPLORATION
After researching the habitat of my creature, I found that the Hornbill can usually be found in warmer forrest areas. Going off from this, I chose to use a yellow-green analogous color harmony for my composition. I felt like this specific color choice would best represent a place my creature would reside in.
